Sir, ma’am, I was SSG Kroger’s Platoon Leader during Desert Shield and Storm. I am so disheartened to learn of his passing. He and I were the same age. He was my Dismounted Infantry Senior NCO and performed exceptionally leading and taking care of his Soldiers. On the 3rd night of the war, we encountered an Iraqi patrol after refueling and returning to our fighting positions. We ended up firing on the patrol and taking them prisoner. Your son was in charge of securing all the prisoners. It was very dark and he had to physically restrain the Iraqi Soldiers so that they did not escape. It was a very tense night for us as a Platoon and exhibited exceptional bravery and of course his “bravado” which we all teased him about. Earlier before the ground war started, I selected him to lead a reconnaissance patrol behind enemy lines to discern their positions. We were to be inserted at night by helicopter and conduct a 12 mile search for enemy positions and then be extracted. He trained his Soldiers hard and ensured that they were ready. I had no doubt that he would accomplish the mission. While the mission was ultimately scrubbed, we were ready to execute and it helped us prepare for future efforts. SSG Kreger was exactly the kind of Soldier that I always admired, tough, determined, and straightforward. I have included a few pictures from our time during the war. We served together for another year or 2 after we got back. It has been 30 years since then and I will never forget his impact on me or the Soldiers he led. Please feel free to reach out to me at 813-395-3226 or rldubreuil@gmail.com.

It's been 30 years since the Gulf War and was searching online to try and track down some of the guys I served with over there. While doing so, I stumbled across Richard's obituary. I served with Rich from 1988 to 1991 while stationed in Fort Hood, TX. I also served with him during the Gulf War (he was actually my squad leader). Rich was an outstanding soldier and it was an honor serving with him. As a lowly Corporal at the time, he mentored me and I became a better NCO because of him.
Rest in piece Rich!!

Dear Richard. I regret that I was not given the honor of meeting you face to face. I am at a loss for not having the chance to see your smile, hear your voice or simply shake your hand. Thank you for sharing your family with me!!!!!! Thank you for your infeectious 'always, positive' attitude. Thank you for your sense of humor - even when it was not easy. Thank you for your strength and endurance. Most of all, Thank You for your 'Rock' solid faith. You have left your mark on my life as you have done for so many countless others. May God be smiling upon you this very moment, saying, 'This is my son, in whom I am well please.' Richard, what a 'Gift' you are!!!

Daushay,
I had the privilege of serving with your father during the Gulf War. If you or any of your family members would like pictures of him I would be more than happy to share them with you. I was the unofficial platoon photographer over there and have numerous pics of him.

Rich will be missed by many. Although it has been more than 20 years since I last saw Rich, he left a lasting impression on me and my family over the years that we knew him and know this world will not be the same without him. He and his family are in our thoughts and prayers.

Angels DO walk among us. During the time we all thought we were 'caring' for Rich, he was really taking care of us. I was fortunate enough to spend time with Rich in the evenings when things quieted down, and he would share stories about his life and his love for his family and strenghth in his faith. He brought smiles to my heart. I never left his room without hearing 'Thank you'. Thank you Rich...you've earned your wings.

It was a great pleasure to work with Rich the last year or so,he was truly the person that everyone strived to be. Never bitter or angry for the situation that he was in. Just knew that GOD had put him in the situation for a reason. I know that he is in heaven now and not in pain anymore, with his savior Jesus Christ. Rest in Peace Rich! My prayers and thoughts are with you and your family Mary.

to my dad: first off let me start by saying that you were the best father anyone could ever have. i will always remember everything you ever taught me. i was truly blessed to be your daughter. ive always looked up to you ever since i was young. that will never change. if i could even be half the person you were then i would be a truly amazing person. you were my hero when i was young and i aspired to be like you in every single way. im am glad to say that you were my hero then, and you still are now. i thank you for all the things you've taught me. you've taught me more than any textbook could ever teach me. you've touched so many lives without even knowing it. you've made such a huge impact on everyone. even people who just barely met you. it takes one hell of a person to do that. most people can't even make an impact like that on someone whom they've known for years. the best lesson you have ever taught me is to never give up.and that life is a gift.dont abuse it.dont waste it. i love you dad. and you will be forever missed and always in my heart. <3333

I am so grateful that I was able to get to know Rich. He always wanted to work so hard with Therapy! He had such inner strength. He helped me get through a time that I was feeling down about my own health. Not from anything that he said, but through the strength and courage he showed. I saw him in more physical pain than I've ever seen a person endure, and yet he was so grateful to God for every day! He is an Angel now, looking over us all. Mary, my prayers are with you and your family.

Mary and Akaya, Yes you certainly were blessed to know and love Rich the husband and father and we (his east coast family) were blessed to know Richard the child and teenager. I and my family have wonderful memories of holidays together, picnics, vacation trips to Hershey Park and Land of Make Believe. The time spent together 8 years ago when he came east, the treasured group picture with his brother and sister, (minus Matt who was in Japan). nieces, and cousins, that was a great visit. Yes he must be smiling down at us all, just knowing how many lives he has touched in such a special loving way. Rest in peace Richard, in God's arms and with your Mom and Dad, Nancy and Dick Kreger. Mary and Akaya, you are in my thoughts and prayers. Love, 'Aunt' Jackie

I was saddened to hear of the passing of an old friend, fellow soldier, music loving fisherman. Rich and I had many an interesting conversation while working in Yakima and fishing with Rick on the Puget sound. He will be missed by all, and although it has been many years since I saw him last, I will never forget the years that we were friends. My sincerest condolences and sympathies to his family. I am so grateful to become a part of both your lives. All though I didn't know Rich for a long time, I was so impressed with all his knowlege and compassion. I truely wish I had met him before I did, as I would have loved to share my fishing and gardening experiences with him. I know the Lord our G-D had a plan for us to meet. I thank the Lord our G-D for bringing us together. I know Riches spirit is up in Heaven. He is at peace now, with no more suffering. I can not find the words to express my deepest love for you and your family. Peace, love always Marianne

Dear Mary First let me say how sorry I am for your loss. Rick was much more than just a friend to me. I Looked up to him in strength of spirit, in wisdom, and in many talents. I often listen to his music, it never fails to stir my soul. Though the fish often got the better of us, Im proud to say that he was the best fishing partner a guy could ever have. Wed float quietly on the water for hours, sometimes catching fish sometimes not. But wed always enjoy ourselves. Peacefully taking in all the beauty Mother Nature had provided for us. Looking back during the past few years, knowing how little Rich got out, makes the memories of our fishing trips together much more meaningful. Ive missed those times as of late. Ill miss him forever. In the pictures I have of Rich I see my fishing partner, I see a fish he was thankful to have shared a moment with before he let it go, but mostly I see a friend whose mind was at easy. A friend, who at that moment wasnt in pain, wasnt distracted but hardship or sorrow, a friend whose spirit was free. Im proud to have shared those times with Rich. Such a wonderful friend! As with my grandfather, the man who taught me how to fish, I know that Rich will be looking down upon me from heaven each time I cast a line. Peace be with you Rich RICK RICHTER
